The Grand Lakes Region of Maine is the perfect place for an affordable, family-friendly vacation, with access to beautiful lakes, and scenic views in a remote and relaxed setting. The Grand Lakes Region and the surrounding area is easily accessible for people who want an adventure off the coast.
This itinerary highlights a three-day trip centered around the ease of access to paddling and camping in the area, for outdoor adventures or those new to this type of experience, with DownEast Acadia at the center of their weekend.
Before you go: Check out the Visitor's Guide and Maps and the Downeast Lakes Water Trail.

First, drive up Route 9 to Million Dollar View Scenic Outlook.

Use Danforth General Store and Danforth Farmers Market to stock up on supplies for a day of paddling ahead.

Stop by and talk to Downeast Lakes Land Trust, who manages 57,703 acres of protected lands in the area, including much of the canoe route in this itinerary. They are responsible for protecting lakeshores, improving fish and wildlife habitats, providing public recreation opportunities, offering educational programs, and supporting jobs in the forest and on the water. They are dedicated to the Downeast economy and environment, and eager to discuss anything related to their area and cause!

Head to Weatherby's Resort for your Canoe Rental and Shuttle.

Park your kayak for a night of camping at Little Mayberry Cove. The campsite is large and private, first-come, first-served, and only accessible by water.

Begin your paddle to Junior Lake! You'll camp here overnight and paddle around again all day until posting up to camp in a different location the following night.

Set up camp for night 2 at Stone Dam. Here you'll find easy swimming access, beautiful views into a lake and a separate stream, tons of flat area to camp, and a huge fire ring for those lucky folks who call ahead for their permit.

Paddle over to Third Machias Lake on Day 3 via the Narrows channel and enjoy the scenery. This will likely be the most difficult part of the paddle, but the gorgeous and practically untouched streams certainly make it worthwhile!

On your way home, be sure to stop into Airline Brewing Company for a well-deserved meal and beverage. This place is a gem in Amherst, Maine based in a century-old furniture makerspace. Top menu recommendations (other than their thirst-quenching beer on tap) include the mussels and peanut-butter-stout float. Congratulations on an epic adventure!
